7 Days of Green

They say that change is always good… and that we learn and enrich our lives from every experience.

I cut my hair! "You look great!"

I quit my job! "Things happen for a reason, I'm sure something even better is in store for you".

I'm moving away! "Let me give you a hand, we will live much closer to each other now!"

I've decided to do a 7 day Green Juice Fast, starting this Sunday! "You are going to starve your body!", "Isn't that dangerous?", "You must be crazy!", "For what?", "That isn't right, our bodies need food, you can get sick".

Fear to the unknown always triggers doubt, prejudice and judgement in people. My learning journey started about five years ago, when I had my very first Green Juice at my sister Mariana's house in the UK. I thought it was different but I kind of enjoyed it! It wasn't until two years later that I began to incorporate it into my diet, I used to go to the local market in Cusco city (Perú). Carmen (the juice lady) knew exactly how I liked it! And two years after that I decided to invest in a proper juice extractor which I consider it to be one of my best friends and health allies, I call it my "Health Insurance".

Time passed and I noticed how enjoyable my new habit had become, so I decided to take it to the next level. I started reading a lot about fasting through articles, documentaries and testimonials about detox programs, and found that most are based on juicing fruits and vegetables. I learnt that fasting has been a part of people's lives since the beginning of time, through different cultures and religions. I am lucky that two of my siblings are deeply involved in healthcare and illness prevention so I knew I had backup at every point. I also had a long chat with my brother-in-law Sameer, he had done fasting before and took me through some of the expected emotions and process. So I took the challenge and did it! 5 green juices a day for 7 days, I had all that time to reflect, watch myself very closely and observe behaviour and feelings. It's incredible how the body reacts when you give it priority, time to rest and regenerate.

Some of the things I noticed after my detox week:

  • I had deeper sleep
  • Increased energy throughout the day
  • My digestion improved
  • I didn't wake up with a bitter taste in my mouth 
  • I lost a bit of weight but felt stronger than ever, specially in the last few days
  • During my next menstrual cycle, I didn't need to take the usual pill to num the symptoms, I didn't have major discomforts nor pain. This was not only shocking but unexpected side effect of the clease.

I manage a Hotel and Restaurant in Cusco. It's a highly energy consuming and demanding job but I find it very refreshing to wake up every day and being able to share my Green Juice routine with four of my coworkers: Gladys, Flavia, Mariela and Vanessa have also learnt to enjoy the energy boost and health benefits of Green Juice.

Would I do it again? Of course I would! At least once a year. Both our bodies and minds are able to cleanse and regenerate when given the right tools. No harm trying! Fasting is good for everyone! Maybe not the exact one I did but you can find the right one for you. Empower yourself with knowledge and the rest is easy. Plus, seven days in your life is NOTHING!
